Tea-time gifts worth slowing down for

For the friend who deserves a proper little break.

Pair a drink with something lovely

Think shortbread with tea, biscuits with coffee, or a small chocolate selection alongside their favourite mug. Choose the flavours they actually enjoy.

Choose practical packaging

A biscuit tin can be handy after the treats are gone. Check dimensions and contents rather than assuming every gift tin is generously filled.

Add your own touch

A note explaining why you chose it makes a simple gift more personal. Check dates, ingredients and storage details before handing it over.

Choose around one familiar ritual

Ask whether the person likes a particular tea, coffee or other warm drink, and whether they use loose ingredients, bags, pods or ground coffee. These formats can depend on equipment they already own. A decorative tin is only useful when its contents match the routine. Avoid choosing a brewing accessory that requires an incompatible machine or an extra purchase.

Read the pack sizes and exact contents of any set. A cup, spoon or biscuit shown in a styled picture may not be included. If choosing food, confirm dietary requirements and keep ingredients and dates available. For drinkware, compare capacity, dimensions and the actual care instructions with the way the recipient will use it.

Leave a little room in the gift

One familiar drink and a modest treat can make a complete present. Include a message suggesting a quiet break together, rather than increasing the quantity to make the box seem substantial. Check where the recipient can store it and whether the package can be resealed after opening. Keep the seller’s receipt separate from any personal note so an unsuitable item can be dealt with without losing the message.
